2 Muffler
The muffler is alluded to as early as 1457. In 1580 it is termed " a kerchief or like thing that men and women used to weare about their necke and cheekes; it may be used for a muffler." It was used to cover the nose, mouth and chin. Today any form of thick neck covering can be termed a muffler. A woven muffler may be a square of silk, rayon, wool, or cotton, folded several times from corner to corner and worn round the neck. The name muffler is also given to long scarves which may be knitted or woven. -

audit
Systematic, independent and documented process for obtaining audit evidence and evaluating it objectively to determine the extent to which audit criteria are fulfilled.
Note 1. Internal audits, sometimes called first-party audits, are conducted by, or on behalf of the organization itself for internal purposes and can form the basis for an organizations self-declaration of conformity. In many cases, particularly in smaller organizations, independence can be demonstrated by the freedom from responsibility for the activity being audited.
Note 2. External audits include those generally termed second- and third-party audits. Second-party audits are conducted by parties having an interest in the organization, such as customers, or by other persons on their behalf. Third party audits are conducted by external, independent auditing organizations, such as those providing registration or certification of conformity to the requirements of ISO 9001 and ISO 14001.
Note 3. When a quality management system and an environmental management system are audited together, this is termed a combined audit.
Note 4. When two or more auditing organizations co-operate to audit a single auditee, this is termed a joint audit.

11 Ideas
I never wrote or concluded that the mind required innate ideas which were in some sort different from its faculty of thinking; but when I observed the existence in me of certain thoughts which proceeded, not from extraneous objects nor from the determination of my will, but solely from the faculty of thinking which is within me, then... I termed [these] "innate." (Descartes, 1955, p. 442)[S]imple ideas are not fictions of our fancies, but the natural and regular productions of things without us really operating upon us.... Thus, the idea of whiteness or bitterness, as it is in the mind, exactly answering that power which is in any body to produce it there, has all the real conformity it can or ought to have with things without us.... [However], all our complex ideas except those of substances being archetypes of the mind's own making, not intended to be the copies of anything, as to their originals, cannot want any conformity necessary to real knowledge. For that which is not designed to represent anything but itself, can never be capable of a wrong representation, nor mislead us from the true apprehension of anything by its dislikeness to it; and such, excepting those of substances, are all our complex ideas: which... are combinations of ideas which the mind by its free choice puts together without considering any connection they have in nature. (Locke, 1956, B. IV, Chap. 4, Sec. 5)[O]ur moral ideas as well as mathematical, being archetypes themselves, and so adequate and complete ideas, all the agreement or disagreement which we shall find in them will produce real knowledge, as well as in mathematical figures. (Locke, 1956, B. IV, Chap. 4, Sec. 7)Ideas... are real things, or do really exist; this we do not deny, but we deny they can subsist without the minds which perceive them, or that they are resemblances of any archetypes existing without the mind; since the very being of a sensation or idea consists in being perceived, and an idea can be like nothing but an idea. (Berkeley, 1996, Pt. I, No. 90, pp. 63-64)The empiricists were right to believe that facts and ideas are significantly connected, but they inverted the relationship. Ideas create information, not the other way around. Every fact grows from an idea; it is the answer to a question we could not ask in the first place if an idea had not been invented which isolated some portion of the world, made it important, focused our attention, and stimulated inquiry. 13 Unconscious
Prior to Descartes and his sharp definition of the dualism there was no cause to contemplate the possible existence of unconscious mentality as part of a separate realm of mind. Many religious and speculative thinkers had taken for granted factors lying outside but influencing immediate awareness.... Until an attempt had been made (with apparent success) to choose awareness as the defining characteristic of mind, there was no occasion to invent the idea of unconscious mind.... It is only after Descartes that we find, first the idea and then the term "unconscious mind" entering European thought. (Whyte, 1962, p. 25)If there are two realms, physical and mental, awareness cannot be taken as the criterion of mentality [because] the springs of human nature lie in the unconscious... as the realm which links the moments of human awareness with the background of organic processes within which they emerge. (Whyte, 1962, p. 63)he unconscious was no more invented by Freud than evolution was invented by Darwin, and has an equally impressive pedigree, reaching back to antiquity.... At the dawn of Christian Europe the dominant influence were the Neoplatonists; foremost among them Plotinus, who took it for granted that "feelings can be present without awareness of them," that "the absence of a conscious perception is no proof of the absence of mental activity," and who talked confidently of a "mirror" in the mind which, when correctly aimed, reflects the processes going on inside it, when aimed in another direction, fails to do so-but the process goes on all the same. Augustine marvelled at man's immense store of unconscious memories-"a spreading, limitless room within me-who can reach its limitless depth?"The knowledge of unconscious mentation had always been there, as can be shown by quotations from theologians like St. Thomas Aquinas, mystics like Jacob Boehme, physicians like Paracelsus, astronomers like Kepler, writers and poets as far apart as Dante, Cervantes, Shakespeare, and Montaigne. This in itself is in no way remarkable; what is remarkable is that this knowledge was lost during the scientific revolution, more particularly under the impact of its most influential philosopher, Rene Descartes. (Koestler, 1964, p. 148)4) The Constructive Nature of Automatic Cognitive Functioning Argues for the Existence of Unconscious ActivityThe constructive nature of the automatic functioning argues the existence of an activity analogous to consciousness though hidden from observation, and we have therefore termed it unconscious. The negative prefix suggests an opposition, but it is no more than verbal, not any sort of hostility or incompatibility being implied by it, but simply the absence of consciousness. Yet a real opposition between the conscious and the unconscious activity does subsist in the limitations which the former tends to impose on the latter. 16 Binding
When two separate fabrics are woven together in the loom and are to be joined, the process is termed binding. Any thread which is used to bind or hold these two cloths together is termed a binding thread. This can be done by lifting a warp thread from the back cloth, over a face cloth pick, and lifting the face cloth threads on each side. Another method is to use an extra warp which weaves under the back cloth picks and over the face cloth picks, and is thus so covered, that it is not seen. -
17 Hawthorne experiments
Gen Mgta series of studies undertaken at the Hawthorne plant of Western Electric in the United States from which Elton Mayo concluded that an approach emphasizing employee participation can improve productivity. The Hawthorne experiments began in 1924 as a study conducted by the National Research Council into the relationship between workplace lighting and employee efficiency, and was then extended to include wage incentives and rest periods. It was found that whatever variations were applied upward or downward, output rose, and this was termed the Hawthorne effect. The increased productivity was attributed to several causes, including small group size, earnings, the novelty of being part of an experiment, and the increased attention given to the employees being studied. The style of the supervisor, which was relaxed and friendly, in contrast to the then standard practice, was found to be particularly important. In a second group of employees, however, it was observed that, as the experiments progressed, output was restricted, and that whatever the incentive, the group showed a resistance to it. In 1929, and 1930, Elton Mayo visited Hawthorne. He linked supervisory style and levels of morale with productivity. High productivity resulted from an engaged supervisory style that encouraged participation. Low productivity resulted when a supervisor remained remote and retained a traditional supervisory role. The Hawthorne experiments established the importance of management style and interpersonal skills to organizational success. -
18 benchmark
•• Asked if the new U.N. Security Council resolution to be proposed by the United States and Britain would include benchmarks for Iraq’s compliance, Powell said the benchmarks already exist.
Washington Post):
•• Chile yesterday became the first of the six to declare itself against the resolution. Its U.N. ambassador, Juan Gabriel Valdes, said, “Chile can only support a resolution that includes benchmarks and timetables” for Iraqi progress.
•• Despite apparent American misgivings about Britain’ s likely participation in a war in Iraq, Prime Minister Tony Blair laid down six new conditions today for Saddam Hussein to avoid war. <...> The six conditions, which Mr. Blair termed “ benchmarks,” also included a demand that Iraq produce a contentious “ drone” aircraft for inspection or prove that it had been destroyed.

πῶλος, ου, ὁ (Hom.+; ins, pap, LXX; Ps-Phoc. 126; Just; Philo.)① young animal, foal (orig. ‘colt of a horse’: Hom. et al.; besides, it refers to a horse that is old enough to use: Hipponax 41 Diehl; Anacr. 88 D.; X., De Re Equ. 1, 6 al.; PGM 2, 95; then any ‘young animal’ [Aristot. et al.], the term being applied to any young animal born of its kind, from an elephant to a locust, depending on context; WBauer, The ‘Colt’ of Palm Sunday [Der Palmesel]: JBL 72, ’53, 220–29: the German original in WBauer, Aufsätze u. Kleine Schriften, ed. GStrecker, ’67, 109–20. For an ass cp. exx. fr. See PNepper-Christensen, Das Mt-evangelium, ’58, 143–48.② horse is meant when π. stands alone without indication that it is a foal, and it can refer to any age from the time of being a foal to a grown working animal: Mk 11:2, 4f, 7; Lk 19:30, 33ab, 35.—Just., A I, 54, 7 τὸ τοῦ πώλου ὄνομα καὶ ὄνου πῶλον καὶ ἵππου σημαίνειν ἐδύνατο=‘the term π. was able to signify both the foal of an ass and of a horse’; but there is no evidence that the term π. was ever used without further qualification in the sense of ‘ass’ or ‘foal of an ass’; s. Bauer (1 above), who prefers horse for the passages in Mk and Lk. Most Eng. translations render π. with ‘colt’, and it is difficult to determine what kind of animal is meant in their versions of Mk and Luke, inasmuch as, similar to Greek usage, ‘colt’, when unqualified, is ordinarily associated with a young male horse, although such popular limitation was not the case in earlier stages of the Eng. language: s. OED s.v. ‘colt’.—HKuhn, Das Reittier Jesu usw., ZNW 50, ’59, 82–91; OMichel, Einzugsgeschichte, NTS 6, ’59/60, 81f.—S. also the lit. s.v. ὄνος.—B. 171. DELG. M-M. TW. -
20 Cotton Staple
Staple means the length of the fibre, a good staple is a long fibre, and a short staple is a short fibre. The staple may be termed the average length of the bulk of the fibres. The length of staple determines the counts of yarn that can be spun from any particular cotton. The counts and average lengths for twist are: - Up to 16's, 7/8-in. 17's to 26's, 1-in. 27's to 36's, 11/16-in. 37's to 44's, 11/8-in. 45's to 52's, 13/16-in. 53's to 60's, 11/4-in. 61's to 70's, 15/16-in. 71's to 80's, 13/8-in. 81's to 90's, 17/16-in.; 90's to 100's, 11/2-in. If the cotton is for weft yarn then about 30 per cent finer counts can be spun from a given length of staple than is possible for twist yarns.
